Unmapped Journey
Acrylic, and mixed media works by internationally-recognized painter
Gregory Burns. The work is open to the public and is on display at 4604
Scotts Valley Drive, Scotts Valley. The show is curated by Christine Murray.
Murray describes the show as “A conversation through canvas about
the artist’s experiences living in both the East and the West.”
Burns divides his time between homes in Singapore and the South Bay. His
family resides in Santa Cruz.
Inspired by his journeys through China, Nepal, India, Burma, Cambodia,
Laos, Japan and Indonesia, Burns’ pieces reflect his ongoing fascination
with sacred sites and sanctuaries. “There are pieces inspired by
Hindu temples, and others by the Redwoods at Big Basin,” notes Murray.
Using bold color fields and collaged remnants from his travels, the artist
attempts to convey the various transitions and migrations that are a part
of life’s journey. Many of his works are painted on maps and navigational
charts.
Disabled since infancy by polio, Burns has nevertheless climbed mountains,
competed internationally as a swimmer, and traveled extensively. He believes
that rather than hindering his creative nature, contracting polio allowed
him to concentrate on developing areas of his character that enhanced
his artistic talents. He is a motivational speaker, and author of ‘Painted
Journey’, a book that encapsulates ten of his expeditions and exhibitions
in countries around the world.
